Celebrating the Divine Protector and His Devotee Prahlada
Bhagwaan Narasimha Jayanti, celebrated annually on the 14th day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month of Vaishakha, commemorates the appearance of Lord Narasimha, the fierce lion-headed avatar of Lord Vishnu. This year it falls on Wednesday 22nd May 2024. This auspicious occasion celebrates the triumph of good over evil and the unwavering devotion of Prahlada, a young boy who faced relentless persecution for his faith in Lord Vishnu.
The Legend of Lord Narasimha and Prahlada
Hiranyakashipu, a powerful demon king, was blinded by arrogance and declared himself the supreme being, demanding that everyone worship him. However, his young son, Prahlada, remained steadfast in his devotion to Lord Vishnu. Enraged by Prahlada's defiance, Hiranyakashipu subjected him to numerous trials, all of which Prahlada miraculously survived, protected by his unwavering faith.
Desperate to eliminate Prahlada's devotion, Hiranyakashipu challenged the existence of Lord Vishnu, asking if he resided in a pillar. Prahlada, ever truthful, affirmed Vishnu's presence. Hiranyakashipu, in a fit of fury, struck the pillar, from which emerged Lord Narasimha, a fearsome manifestation of divine power.
Narasimha, neither man nor beast, fulfilled the seemingly impossible conditions of Hiranyakashipu's boon, killing him at dusk, not day, on his doorstep, not inside or outside, using his claws, not a weapon. This act of divine justice protected Prahlada and restored order.
